Obituary

Lillian Kapechuk Ulissey died peacefully in her home on Sunday, August 12, 2012. Lillian was born October 19, 1927 in Long Island, New York, the daughter of Samuel and Helen Kapechuk. She graduated in 1952 with a BA from Barat College of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Illinois, and in 1953 with an MA from SUNY Albany.

Lillian was a novice (RSCJ) at Kenwood in Albany but did not take her final vows, deciding instead to join the U. S. Navy as a WAVE during the Korean Crisis.  She was the only woman accepted for training in the Russian Language School, and went on to serve in the cryptology community in Hawaii, where she met Theodore (“Ted”) Ulissey.  They were married in Honolulu on January 25, 1955, and raised their family primarily in Saudi Arabia, where Ted was employed with the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO).  Ted preceded her in death on August 22, 1983.

Lillian is survived by her sister, Olga Kapechuk, Cambridge, MA; her six children, Rebecca Gardner-Brown, Poulsbo, WA; Elinor Bartlett, Vienna, VA; Dr. Michael Ulissey, Dallas, TX; Catherine Ulissey, Cambridge, MA; Dr. Laurence Ulissey, Houston, TX; and Stacia Wagner, Clarksville, MD; and by 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service and interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on December 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at Ft. Meyer Officer's Club at Noon.  To attend, please contact Elinor Bartlett at 703.994.0547 (9306 Sibelius Dr., Vienna, VA 22182).  In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Society of the Sacred Heart, 4120 Forest Park Ave., Saint Louis, MO 63108, or Hillsdale College, 33 East College Street, Hillsdale, MI.

The family would be honored if friends of Barat who knew Lillian or the family would like to attend.  Lillian's daughters also attended Barat:  Becky Ulissey, '77; and Ellie Ulissey, '78.  Please RSVP to Ellie by Sunday, December 2, 2012 to receive driving, parking and reception information.
