Lillian Kapechuk Ulissey – Barat ‘52
Obituary
Lillian Kapechuk Ulissey died peacefully in her
home on Sunday, August 12, 2012. Lillian was born October 19, 1927 in Long
Island, New York, the daughter of Samuel and Helen Kapechuk. She graduated in
1952 with a BA from Barat College of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Illinois,
and in 1953 with an MA from SUNY Albany.
Lillian was a novice (RSCJ) at Kenwood in
Albany but did not take her final vows, deciding instead to join the U. S. Navy
as a WAVE during the Korean Crisis. She was
the only woman accepted for training in the Russian Language School, and went
on to serve in the cryptology community in Hawaii, where she met Theodore
(“Ted”) Ulissey. They were married in
Honolulu on January 25, 1955, and raised their family primarily in Saudi Arabia,
where Ted was employed with the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO). Ted preceded her in death on August 22, 1983.
Lillian is survived by her sister, Olga
Kapechuk, Cambridge, MA; her six children, Rebecca Gardner-Brown, Poulsbo, WA;
Elinor Bartlett, Vienna, VA; Dr. Michael Ulissey, Dallas, TX; Catherine
Ulissey, Cambridge, MA; Dr. Laurence Ulissey, Houston, TX; and Stacia Wagner,
Clarksville, MD; and by 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service and interment will be held
at Arlington National Cemetery on December 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at
Ft. Meyer Officer's Club at Noon. To attend, please contact
